Posting a story takes about three taps. Here's the full flow:

1. Open Instagram and tap the + in the top-right corner, or swipe right from your feed to open the Stories camera.
2. Capture something with the camera, or tap the gallery icon in the bottom-left to upload a photo or video from your camera roll.
3. Edit your story. Add stickers from the sticker tray, type with the text tool, draw with the brush or apply a filter or effect.
4. Tap Your story at the bottom to share with everyone who follows you. Or tap Close friends to share only with the people on your Close Friends list. You can also share directly to specific people via DM.
5. Once your story is live, swipe up to see who's viewed it.

Not every story is meant for everyone. Your Close Friends list is a great way to share unfiltered hot takes, random thoughts or moments you'd only show your inner circle. You control who's on the list and can update it anytime.

To set up or edit your Close Friends list, go to your profile, tap the menu icon and select Close friends. Add or remove people as you like. When you post, just tap Close friends instead of Your story and only those people will see it.

Tip: If you're not sure what to share, start with something simple: a photo from your week, a song on repeat or a quick "ask me anything" using the questions sticker.

Instagram Stories last for 24 hours from the moment you post them. After that, they disappear from your profile and from your friends' feeds. Stories are designed to be temporary, which makes them a low-pressure way to share without overthinking.

This is different from a regular Instagram post, which stays on your profile until you archive or delete it.

A single story clip can be up to 60 seconds long. If your video is longer, Instagram automatically splits it into multiple back-to-back story clips so the full thing plays through. You can post as many stories in a day as you want. There's no daily limit.

After 24 hours, your stories don't disappear forever. Instagram automatically saves them to your Stories Archive, a private space only you can see. This turns your stories into a kind of visual diary, perfect for reliving past moments.

There are two ways to add a story to a Highlight:

1. From an active story: Open one of your current stories, tap the three dot menu first, then tap Highlight at the bottom and either add it to an existing Highlight or create a new one.
2. From your archive: Go to your profile, tap the menu icon in the top-right and tap Archive. Find any past story (Instagram archives all your stories automatically by default) and add it to a Highlight from there.

Highlights show up as round covers under your profile bio and stay there until you remove them. Use them to organize your favorite moments to share with others and look back on: travel, recipes, big projects or ongoing series.

Tip: Give each Highlight a clear name and a custom cover image so they're easy to browse at a glance.

If you're not sure what to share or want to post without too much effort, templates and layout tools are your friend. They give you a starting point so you can focus on the content, not the design.

Templates are ready-made designs you can fill in with your own photos and text. You'll find them in a few places:

1. When creating a story, tap Add Yours at the top of the gallery selection page to see trending prompts and templates.
2. In the sticker tray, tap the Add Yours sticker to create your own prompt or start a new template that friends can respond to.

Templates are great when you want to join a trend or just need a creative nudge.

The Layout feature in the camera lets you split a single story frame into a grid of up to 6 photos. Tap Layout in the side toolbar before capturing, choose your grid style and shoot or upload photos for each panel.

This works well for before-and-afters, photo dumps or showing multiple angles of the same moment.

For something more dynamic, try Collage. This AI-powered tool creates animated collages from 5 or more photos. It automatically arranges your images with movement and style, turning a batch of photos into something fun to watch.

Open the Stories camera, select multiple photos from your gallery and look for the Collage option. It's a quick way to share a lot without creating multiple story slides.

Music stickers add a song to your story, complete with album art or a spinning vinyl design. Open the sticker tray and select Music. Search for a song or browse trending tracks, then drag the highlighted lyrics to the moment in the song you want to share.

Once you've added a track, you can tap the vinyl design to choose from different visual styles: sticker, lyrics-only or full cover. The vinyl spins on the story and friends can "scratch" it for a fun audio cue.

Finding the right song: If you're not sure what to add, check the For You section in the music picker. It suggests tracks based on what you've listened to and what's popular with your friends. The poll sticker lets you ask a question with two answer options. Friends tap to vote and you can watch the results update in real time. The quiz sticker works similarly but lets you add four answer choices with one correct answer, handy for "guess where I am" or "name this song" prompts.

To add either, open the sticker tray, tap Poll or Quiz and customize the question and answers. Both stickers are one of the easiest ways to get friends interacting with your story.

Add Yours is a sticker that turns your story into a prompt other people can respond to. Add an Add Yours sticker with a prompt ("show me your favorite mug," "post a song that lifts your mood") and friends can tap to add their own response, which then chains together into a thread of stories anyone can join.

You can find Add Yours prompts in two places:

1. In the sticker tray: Tap the Add Yours sticker to create your own prompt or template.
2. From the gallery: When creating a story, tap Add Yours at the top of the gallery selection page to see popular prompts and jump right in.

The countdown sticker lets you build anticipation for an event: a concert, a birthday, a launch or just the end of the week. To create one, add the sticker, set the date and time and customize the countdown name and color.

Friends can also subscribe to your countdown and get a notification when time's up.

The questions sticker

opens up a space for friends to send you replies. Add the sticker with a prompt ("ask me anything," "what should I cook tonight," "drop your music recs") and friends can type a response that comes to you privately. You can then share their response anonymously in a follow-up story.
