Data Scientist, Analytics - Instagram - Discovery Integrity

In Discovery, we take pride in building products that make Instagram the best place for users to explore their interests and discover authentic, up & coming Creators who push the culture forward. Through Search, Explore, Hashtags and many other channels, we leverage a broad range of ML and ranking strategies alongside new product development to accomplish this. We also have a strong commitment to safety, and are making big investments to ensure these powerful algorithms and products have strong defenses against adversarial actors that try to exploit our products to spread harmful or misleading content. Instagram Discovery is building an exciting new team that will solve one of the most important problems at the company today: eliminate the spread of misleading and harmful content on Instagram, and harden our discovery surfaces against exploitation. To deliver on this, we must develop a deep understanding of how this content is discovered and perpetuated across Instagram, and develop data-driven strategies to protect the community. This includes understanding the lifecycle of this content from seed to discovery to spread, and how different Instagram products are used or exploited to that effect. The team has broad latitude to work across all of Instagram product in order to deliver on this mission, and we expect to develop novel interventions and measurement across multiple products, including (but not limited to) Search, Hashtags, and Profile. The Data Scientist who joins us will play a critical role in driving the direction of this team, and in designing new strategies to limit the discoverability and spread of misleading and harmful content across Instagram. We are looking for a seasoned Data Scientist who is a strong systems-thinker with a track record of solving broad & complex problems. Someone who thrives with deeper technical Data Science projects, but also is a strong communicator who can see the simple business story behind a complex analysis. We expect a substantial amount of work developing new interventions that plug into existing retrieval and ranking systems on a range of products, such as Hashtags and Search, so a background and interest in ranking and retrieval systems, recommendation systems, and/or Integrity is desired for this role. You will work in close partnership with a top-notch group of engineers, researchers and data scientists across Facebook, Inc. to translate user research and guidance from technical experts into data-driven product strategies. You will enjoy working with one of the richest data sets in the world, cutting edge technology, and the ability to see your strategic thinking and ideas turned into real products on a regular basis. You should be flexible and comfortable working in a cross-functional capacity within a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. Additionally, we’re looking for individuals who are truly passionate and have demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategies that address behavioral and contextual user needs.

Responsibilities

  • Drive strategic organization wide data science initiatives on Discoverability & Searchability problems. Serve as tech lead on critical data science projects at the intersection of the Creators & Discovery pillar & Well-being pillar.
  • Identify high impact analytical problems and find innovative ways to tackle these problems via data analysis, experimentation, and statistical modeling.
  • Evolve our measurement strategy by identifying novel metrics and measurement approaches to guide product strategy, goaling and experiments.
  • Provide technical and product mentorship to members of the Creators & Discovery and Well-being data science teams, to ensure continual up-leveling of our expertise.
  • Drive or partner to execute on high priority learning/measurement initiatives for Discovery Integrity, Instagram, and Facebook.
  • Establish strong trusted relationships with the data science and product communities of Instagram and Facebook.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree 9+ years experience, Masters Degree 7+ years experience, or PhD 5+ years experience working within an analytical role.
  • Experience leading and personally executing cross-functional data science projects with measurable organizational and product impact.
  • Demonstrated an extensive track record of great judgement in balancing practical business needs and scientific rigor.
  • Programming skills: Expert knowledge of SQL, Python, R.
  • Communication skills and experience connecting with and influencing a broad spectrum of audiences.
  • Practical, hands-on experience with a wide variety of statistical inference and modeling methods, specifically around A/B experiments and their design, missing data, survey sampling, and/or panel data.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or similar quantitative discipline
  • Experience mitigating integrity issues and improving users’ well-being on online social platforms
  • Experience with Ranking, Search, Recommendation Systems, and/or Machine Learning
