Threads is an app from Instagram where you can view and share public conversations. Depending on how you use Threads, you can also post threads, reply to others and follow profiles you’re interested in. Threads and replies can include short pieces of text, links, photos, videos or any combination of them.
People can also follow you to see your threads and replies in their feeds and from your profile. Who can see your posts is determined by your profile’s privacy setting and other settings. People can reply to your posts to add to the discussion or like, share, quote or repost your content. Anyone who has an Instagram account can create a Threads profile.
You can start a new thread and choose who can reply to it.

You can add to a discussion by replying to others. Your reply will appear in the thread and on your profile where people will be able to reply to it. Note that you may not be able to see all the replies to you. (example: if someone with a private profile replies to you and you don’t follow them.)
Who can see your posts is determined by your profile’s privacy setting. You can also like, share or repost a thread.

Threads is powered by Instagram. When you create a profile on Threads, it’ll be connected to the Instagram account you logged in with. We use your Instagram information in accordance with Meta’s Privacy Policy and Threads Supplemental Privacy Policy to do things like import your profile information, personalize your Threads and Instagram feeds, and help you stay safe on both apps. We use data from Threads to personalize and improve your experiences across Instagram and to promote the safety and integrity of our services.
Data from your Instagram account is used for Threads and can include:
Your Instagram login information
Your Instagram account ID
Your Instagram name and username
Your Instagram profile information like your profile picture, bio and links
Your Instagram followers
Accounts you follow on Instagram
Your age on Instagram
Your Instagram account status relating to intellectual property violations and instances of going against Instagram’s Community Guidelines.
Note: Information relating to your Threads profile will be processed in accordance with Meta’s Privacy Policy and Threads Supplemental Privacy Policy. The Instagram Terms of Use and Threads Terms of Use apply to your use of Threads.
You can add to a discussion by replying to a post on Threads. When you reply to a post, your reply will appear as its own thread in the replies tab on your profile and people will be able to reply to it.
Note: If you have a public profile, anyone on or off Threads can see your replies. Learn more about the differences between public and private profiles.

Click below the post you want to reply to. Note: If you have a private profile and reply to someone you don’t follow, only that person can see your reply.
Enter your reply.
To choose who can reply to your thread, click Anyone can reply in the bottom left before posting your thread. You can limit who can reply to Profiles you follow or Mentioned only.
If you limit replies, your thread won’t be shared with your fediverse followers.
This setting is not available to private profiles replying to a person that doesn’t follow them.

Tap or Reply to [username] below the post you want to reply to. Note: If you have a private profile and reply to someone who doesn’t follow you, only that person can see your reply.
Enter your reply. You can also tap:
to attach a photo or video to your reply. You can select up to 10 items to attach.
to include a GIF in your reply.
to include a voice recording in your reply. Tap the red button to begin recording. Once you’re done recording, tap the red button again. Your reply will include both the voice recording and text of the voice recording.
to add a poll to your reply.
To choose who can reply to your thread, tap Anyone can reply in the bottom left. You can limit who can reply to Profiles you follow or Mentioned only.
If you limit replies, your thread won’t be shared with your fediverse followers.
This setting is not available to private profiles replying to a person that doesn’t follow them.
Tap Post in the bottom right.
If someone replies to you and you delete your post, their reply won’t be deleted.
If you have a private profile and reply to someone who doesn’t follow you, your reply will include in the top right to denote that only that person can see your reply.
If you and the author of the post have both turned on sharing to the fediverse, a message will appear at the top, as you’re drafting your reply, to indicate that your reply to the post will be shared with users on other servers. Your replies won’t appear on other fediverse servers if the format of the post you’re replying to isn’t supported or the post limits who can reply to it.
If you have turned on sharing to the fediverse and someone from another fediverse server replies directly to your post, you’ll be able to see their reply on Threads. Note: Replies from other servers will appear on Threads after a short delay and currently can only be seen by the author of the post. Certain replies may not be visible on Threads for various reasons, such as the reply’s format being unsupported or for its non-compliance with our safety measures.
While you currently can’t share or reply back to replies you see on Threads from users on other fediverse servers, you can like their reply on Threads.

To create a Threads profile, you’ll need to sign in with your Instagram or Facebook account. You can create one profile on Threads for each Instagram and Facebook account you have.

Create a profile with your Instagram account
Download the Threads app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android).
Once the app is installed, tap to open it.
Tap Continue with Instagram.
Enter your Instagram username and password, then click Log in.
Review information on your Threads experience, then tap Confirm at the bottom.
Select whether you want to have a public or private profile, then tap Continue at the bottom.
Review information on content visibility and the fediverse, then tap Join Threads at the bottom.
Create a profile with your Facebook account
Download the Threads app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android).
Once the app is installed, tap to open it.
Tap Continue with Facebook.
Review your profile information.
Tap Public profile to select whether you want to have a public or private profile, then tap OK at the bottom.
Tap Next at the bottom.
Review the terms and policies, then tap Allow and join Threads at the bottom.
Profiles you follow and profiles following you on Threads won’t affect who you’re following or your followers on Instagram or Facebook.
If the Instagram account you used to create your Threads profile is verified, you can only change your profile picture on Instagram. A verification badge will also be shown on your Threads profile.
If you create a Threads profile with a Facebook account that is verified, your verified badge won’t carry over to Threads.
If you would like to link your identity between your Threads profile and your profile on another server, like Mastodon, you can add a link to your other profile from another server in your Threads bio to create a rel="me" link. Learn how to edit your profile on Threads.
A thread is something you post that appears on your profile and in a feed. It can include short pieces of text, links, photos, videos or any combination of them. Who can see your thread follows your profile’s privacy setting.

Click New post in the bottom right.
Enter what you want to include in your post. You can also click:
Add from gallery to attach a photo or video to your thread.
GIF to include a GIF in your post.
Tag to tag a topic in your post.
Poll to add a poll to your post.
To change who can reply and quote your thread, click Anyone can reply & quote in the bottom left. You can limit who can reply and quote to Profiles you follow or Mentioned only. If you limit replies and quotes, your thread won’t be shared with your fediverse followers.
Click Post in the bottom right.
You can copy the link to your thread by clicking Share below your post.

Tap New post at the bottom.
Enter what you want to include in your thread.

Voice recording to include a voice recording in your post. Tap the red button to begin recording. Once you’re done recording, tap the red button again. Your post will include both the voice recording and text of the voice recording.
Tag to tag a topic in your post.
Poll to add a poll to your post.
Location to add a location to your post.
To add to your thread, tap Add to thread. If your thread contains more than 500 characters, another thread will be added automatically.
To change who can reply and quote your thread, tap Anyone can reply & quote in the bottom left. You can limit who can reply and quote to Profiles you follow or Mentioned only. If you limit replies and quotes, your thread won’t be shared with your fediverse followers.
Tap Post in the bottom right. You’ll see a progress bar at the top while your thread is being posted.
You can choose to share your threads to Instagram and other apps by tapping Share below your post.
If you’ve turned on sharing to the fediverse, your Threads posts are automatically shared to other servers on the fediverse. Note that this will not apply to posts you’ve made before turning on sharing to the fediverse. We will delay sharing your posts to other servers for 15 minutes to allow for editing of your posts on Threads.
Threads that are shared to other servers will include Shared in the top right. Note: While your post with media may be shared to other servers, these servers may have limitations on how media appears on their server, including how many images and videos can be seen.
As you’re drafting a post on Threads, a message will appear at the top when the post won’t be shared to other servers. Your post won’t be shared to other servers if the post:
Includes a poll
Limits who can reply and quote
Contains copyrighted audio that violates our audio licensing agreements. Note: Before posting a thread, Threads won’t be able to notify you if a post that doesn’t adhere to our audio licensing agreements won’t be shared to other fediverse servers.
If someone replies to your thread and you delete your thread, their reply won’t be deleted.
If a private profile you don’t follow replies to your post, only you will be able to see their reply.
If you’ve already shared a post to the fediverse, you can’t change who can reply and quote it.
Posts that are shared to the fediverse may not be shared to all servers because of restrictions that we impose on other servers and restrictions they may impose on us as they relate to moderation policies and federation rules.
Anything you post on Threads is subject to Meta’s music usage guidelines.
Unlike Instagram, Threads currently doesn’t offer the branded content tool. If you are posting branded content on your Threads profile, make sure to indicate that the post is a paid promotion by adding text or hashtags to the post that specify it’s a paid partnership. Note: If you’re under 16, when you create a Threads profile, you’ll have the option to choose between a public or private profile, but Private is selected by default, even if you have a public Instagram account.
When you switch your Threads profile to public or private, it’ll change who can see your posts. You can also manage how public content you post on Threads is suggested by Meta on other Meta Products.

For private profiles:
Follow requests appear in Activity, where you can approve or ignore them.
If someone was already following you before you set your profile to private and you don’t want them to see your posts, you can remove them from your followers list or block them.
For all profiles:
The privacy of your Threads profile and Instagram profile can be different.
Your profile may be recommended for other people on Threads to follow.
Your profile may appear in search results on Threads.
Anyone on Threads can mention you, unless you update your mention settings.
Your profile may appear in search engine results but only your profile information will be visible (your username, name, profile picture, bio and links).
Anyone who can see your thread will be able to take a screenshot of your thread and share it.
When you block someone, they won’t be able to see anything you post on Threads. People aren’t notified when you block them.
There are multiple ways to block or unblock someone on Threads.
Through feed:
Click Options on a post by the profile you want to block or unblock.
Click Block.
Click Block at the bottom to confirm.
Through their profile:
Go to someone’s profile.
Click Options below their profile picture, then click Block or Unblock.
Confirm your choice.
You can also unblock someone by clicking Unblock below the number of followers on their profile.
If you’ve blocked a profile on Threads, the Instagram account connected to that profile will also be blocked. If you’ve blocked an account on Instagram, the Threads profile connected to that account will also be blocked.
Note: If you’ve created a Threads profile with a Facebook account, someone you block on Threads won’t also be blocked on Facebook. Learn how to block or unblock someone on Facebook.
When you block someone:
Their likes will be removed from your posts. Unblocking someone won’t restore their previous likes.
They won’t be able to see your replies or any content you repost.
They won’t be able to mention your username or tag you, even if you change your username.
They won’t be able to find your profile or content on Threads.

There are a few ways you can hide posts you see on Threads that contain potentially offensive, misleading or spam content.
To hide a reply directly to your post:

Click Options next to a reply.
Click Hide for everyone.
You can also choose to automatically hide replies and posts on Threads that don’t go against our Community Standards, but may be inappropriate, disrespectful, or offensive (example: racial slurs, curse words or scams) by using Hidden Words settings. These settings include:
Custom words: You can add words, phrases, numbers and emojis that you do not want to see on Threads to a hidden words list. Posts on Threads that include items on your list will be filtered out of feed and will be covered in search results and on others’ profiles. Replies to your posts will be hidden under the Hidden replies cover at the bottom of your post. This setting is off by default, but you can change it and edit the list at any time. Note: Your list of custom words and phrases is the same for Instagram and Threads.
Unwanted replies: Replies to your post that contain common words, phrases or emojis that may be offensive, misleading or spam will be automatically hidden. Hidden replies in your threads are moved to a covered section at the bottom of your thread. Others can still view these replies. This setting is on by default, but you can change it any time.
To manage hidden words from threads.com:
Click Menu in the bottom left, then click Settings.
Click Privacy at the top.
Click Hidden Words. From here you can:
Click Select next to On or Off below a setting.
Click Manage custom words and phrases and type the words, phrases or emoji you want to hide. Click Add to add each custom word and phrase to your list.
